Ernest R. Sandeen, The Roots of Fundamentalism

 

"The eschatology of United States Protestants, reflecting their brimming optimism and hope, was expressed most frequently as a blending of millennialism and American nationalism. Stemming from the Puritan conviction that the colonists were a chosen people and their commonwealth a 'citty set upon a hill,' reinforced by the War for Independence and the potentialities of the West, Americans vied with each other in producing grander and more glorious prospects for the United States." (Sandeen, 43)

 

1800년대.. 수많은 사람들이 구원을 받고 교회로 몰려드는 미국을 보면서, 당시 사람들은 미국을 천년왕국으로 혹은 미국에 앞으로 천년왕국이 세워질 것으로 기대한 것 같다. 아래 글을 보면 그런 생각이 보인다. 

 

"Systematic theology seldom proved congenial to early nineteenth-century tastes, but the optimism and confidence of postmillennial eschatology did... The leaders of the largest Protestant denominations...plunged their work of with optimism about their methods and confidence that God was blessing their efforts..." (Sandeen, 43)

 

"Samuel H. Cox, ...moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian church for 1846, expressed the idea in a speech delivered in London in 1846 at the first meeting of the Evangelical Alliance... 'I really believe that God has got America within anchorage, and that upon that arena, He intends to display his prodigies for the millennium.'" (Sandeen 43-44).

 

여기서 그냥 millennium 이라고 하지 않고 prodigies for the millennium 이라고 표현한걸 볼 때, 천년왕국의 징조가 보인다고 말하고 있는 셈인데, 사실은 이대로 그냥 천년왕국이 임해버릴 것 같다는 생각에 휩싸여 있는 걸로 느껴진다 개인적으로는. 

 

한편으로는 이해가 안가는 바는 아니다. 우리나라도 1907년 평양대부흥이 임했을 때.. 사람들이 성령의 불을 받고.. 쓰러지고... 회개하고... 예수님을 믿고 ... 하는 일이 주변에서 막 일어난다면... 이러다가 예수님이 오시겠구나... 라는 비슷한 생각을 가지지 않았을까? 게다가 leaven 이 항상 죄를 가리키는 것임을 알지 못한다면, 그리고 마태복음 13장의 누룩이 퍼지는 것을 죄악이 관영하는게 아니고, 하나님의 통치가 막 이 땅에 부글부글 끓어오르는 걸로 잘못 믿는다면, 그럴 수도 있겠다... 그런 생각이 든다. 아니나 다를까, 당시 사용했던 단어들을 보면 마태복음 13장의 반죽속에 숨긴 누룩으로 부풀어오르는 걸 좋은 뜻으로 해석하곤 하는 후천년주의자들의 정서가 느껴진다. 그래서 Sandeen 도 ebullient 란 단어를 썼자: 

 

"...when American millennialism is portrayed as a contrast between the ebullient postmillennialists and fanatic Millerites..." (Sandeen, 44). 

 

"With all our mixtures, there is a leaven of heaven..." (Sandeen, 44; quoting Samuel H. Cox).

 

 

가만보면, nationalism이 믿음과 잘못 결합되면서, 내가 선택받은 존재고... 우리 민족이 선택받은 민족이고 싶은 마음이 있는데... 거기에 theology 까지 도와줘버리면, 이제 걷잡을 수 없이 흘러내려가는 홍수같이 파괴적인 걸 보게 된다.

 

신기한 건 이 현상을 정확히 표현하는 영어단어가 있다는 사실이다. 그 단어는 Chauvinism. Wikipedia 는 이렇게 설명한다

 

Chauvinism is the belief in the superiority or dominance of one's own group or people, who are seen as strong and virtuous, while others are considered weak or unworthy. It can be described as a form of extreme patriotism and nationalism, a fervent faith in national excellence and glory.

 

사실은 이 단어... Sandeen 이 썼길래 무슨 뜻인지 몰라 구글해보니 정확한 뜻을 알게된 단어인데... 당시 미국사람들의 생각을 정확히 표현하는 단어다. 

 

"The brashness and chauvinism of Cox's remarks were often duplicated by other American clergymen whose attitudes were expressed so flamboyantly as to seem a parody of British postmillennialism." (Sandeen, 44).
