Colonists believed that America was a holy land, as McDougall shows: 

 

In 1630, Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop implored his people 'to Consider that wee shall be as a Citty upon a Hill, the eies of all people are uppon us.' (McDougall, 17)

 

City upon a hill 은 산상수훈에 등장하는 표현으로서 그리스도인 혹은 천년왕국을 눈앞에 갖게 될 수도 있었던 '유대인'들을 가리키는데, 그는 여기서 '미국'을 City upon a hill 과 동일시했다. 설교자들의 이 작은 관행이 엄청난 나비효과를 가져오는 걸 나중에 보게된다. 

 

...while the Calvinist zeal of New Englanders waned...over the next 150 years, no preacher or writer gainsaid Oliver Cromwell's dictum to the effect that religion and civil liberty were 'the two greatest concernments that God hath in the world.' (17). 

 

...colonial divines invoked God's blessing on the American cause of 'civil and religious liberty,' for the one could not survive without the other. Congress declared days of national fasting and prayer during the Revolutionary War, again when independence was won in 1783, and again when the Constitution was finished. Preachers up and down the seaboard attributed American independence to the sure hand of Providence: "Here has our God...prepared an asylum for the oppressed in every part of the earth.' On the 300th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America, Elhanan Winchester praised God's Providence for preparing a place for the persecuted of all nations and 'causing it to be the first place upon the globe where equal civil and religious liberty has been established.' Church and state, being separated, 'may both subsist and flourish,' nor 'will God be angry with the United States for giving to the Jews...the equal blessings of protection, liberty, property.' (17)

 

Winchester even spied the fulfillment of Saint John's prophecy to the church of ancient Philadephia: "...[Revelation 2:8]. This is the door of civil and religious liberty which began to be opened in Philadelphia in North America...And it will spread throughout the world.' (17-18). 

 

이 사람의 이 글들은 약간 불편하긴 하다. 크리스챤들이 와서 세운 나라가 잘 되어갈 때, 하나님이 우리를 도와주고 계신다.. 그렇게 생각하는 것은 자연스러운 거 같아서 말이다. 갖다 붙이는 경향... 어느 정도까지는 괜챦은거 아닌가? 크리스챤들이 와서 그들이 리더가 되어서 세운 나라니까... 영국에서부터 독립하려는 전쟁에서 이겼을 때에 하나님이 우리 편이셨다..라고 말하고 글을 쓴건데 말이다... 

 

그런데 어쨌거나 이런 사람들이 그냥 목사님들이었다면, 그리고 일반 성도들이었다면, 별 문제가 아닐텐데, 실제 정치인들이 크리스챤이었던 것이 문제인가? 그것도 아닌데.. 정치인들이 크리스챤이어서 친 크리스챤 정책이나 법을 많이 만들어낸다면, 크리스챤 입장에서는 아주 환영할만한 일 맞지 않는가? 

 

아 다르고 어 다르다는 말처럼. 구분과 원리찾기. 이 두가지를 하는 것과 안하는 것의 차이가 엄청난 나비효과를 불러일으키는 건 아닐까? 원리를 발견하는 것과 '동일시'하는 것의 차이는 분명 나비효과의 유무를 초래하는 듯 보인다. 

 

"In 1783 Ezra Stiles offered the definitive interpretation of American Exceptionalism... His sermon celebrating independence promised that 'God has still greater blessings in store for this vine which his own right hand hat planted... Stiles imagined a nation of 50 million within a century... 'the Lord shall have made his American Israel 'high above all naitons which he hath made.' In short, Americans were a chosen people delivered from bondage to a Promised Land, and you can't get more exceptional than that." (18)

 

유럽에서 건너온 이주자들... 그래서 미국이란 나라를 세운 그들... 그래서 미국이란 나라가 vine 이라고 지금 동일시 하고 있다. 하지만, Unger 를 비롯한 신학자들의 설명은 다르다. 미국은 vine 이 아니다. 동일시는 나비효과를 가져오므로 삼가해야 한다..

 

The vine is a symbol of the nation Israel; thus Israel was a vine brought from Egypt (Ps. 80:8; cf. Isa. 5). To dwell under one’s vine and fig tree is an emblem of domestic happiness and peace (1 Kings 4:25; Ps. 128:3; Mic. 4:4) and a prophetic figure of future millennial blessing. (Merrill Frederick Unger et al., The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary (Chicago: Moody Press, 1988)).

 

그럼 이런 동일시의 나비효과란 어떤 걸 가리키나? Andrea 의 글을 보면 알 수 있다. 

 

“[t]he Supreme Court held that, while Indigenous people had a right to occupancy, they could not hold title to land on the basis of the doctrine of discovery. The European nation that ‘discovered’ land had the right to legal title. Native peoples were disqualified from being ‘discoverers’ because they did not properly work. ‘The tribes of Indians inhabiting this country were fierce savages, whose occupation was war, and whose subsistence was drawn chiefly from the forest. To leave them in possession of their country was to leave the country a wilderness.’ As the labor performed by Native peoples was never considered to be work, Native peoples had the ontological status of things to be discovered – the status of nature. Work is that which transforms nature into property. Native peoples as nature can only create more nature rather than property.” (Smith, 45-6; Emphasis mine).

 

왜 미국의 대법원 판사가... 그렇게 이성적이고 종교적이고 똑똑했을 것이 분명한 사람이, 이런 판결들을 내린 것일까? 미국이 자신을 이스라엘로 동일시 여긴 결과임을 다음 글이 보여준다. 

 

“The problem then with Christian missionization to Indigenous peoples is that only humans can be saved. As a result, as George Tinker notes, Puritans in particular often did not bother missionizing Native peoples unless it was politically expedient because they did not see Native peoples as peoples at all. Rather, as many Native scholars have noted, Native peoples were seen as biblical Canaanites. Albert Cave and others have demonstrated that Christian colonizers often envisioned Native peoples as Canaanites, worthy of mass destruction” (Smith, 47; emphasis mine)

 

미국을 세운 founding fathers 나 당시 청교도 목사님들의 설교에서, 미국정착민들의 열심과 희망을 불러일으켜주려고, 그들을 이스라엘과 동일한 결과 나비효과가 나온 거다. 미국땅은 가나안 땅이 되어 버리고, 거기 원래 살던 인디언들은 가나안족속이 되어 버린 것이니... 그들을 죽이고 그들의 땅을 빼앗는 것은 과거 이스라엘백성이 가나안 땅을 정복했던 것과 동일시 되어 버렸다. 

 

그래서 나는 Replacement theology 는 선한 의도에도 불구하고 너무 썩은 열매... 너무 썩은 나비효과를 내는 것을 볼 때... theology 가 중요하다... theology 가 인류의 생명에 직접 영향을 미친다... 바른 theology가 가르쳐져야 한다.. 그 말을 지금 하고 싶은 거다.. 그래야 내 아들이, 내 자녀들이... 역사상 크리스챤들에 의해 저질러진 수많은 악행들로 인해 기독교를 꺼버리는 일이 안생길 것 같다는 말을 지금 하고 싶은 거다.
